JENNIFER VAN HORN
I was always interested in health, but never quite paid enough attention to my nutrition. I was the “skinny“ girl, very athletic and could eat whatever I wanted...I thought. As an art major at VCU in Richmond, loving my creative lifestyle of sculpture and design, I was finishing up my Bachelor of Fine Arts when it felt like my body completely changed overnight. The stress of my parents sudden divorced was certainly a contributing factor, but the sodas, fast food, and candy did not help either. I gained thirty pounds very quickly and my life as I knew, changed completely. No longer could go to the beach with my friends without covering up in baggy clothes and feeling extremely self-conscious. I quickly became a hermit plagued by depression. My doctor was mystified as to why I had gained the weight so quickly, with a bloated belly and gut-wrenching pain after every meal. It was obvious that I had developed severe digestive issues.
Enough was enough, I thought and I decided to go to a local bookstore and research everything I could get my hands on about naturally healing myself. I read for weeks and weeks, absorbing everything to help myself heal naturally. Long story short is that it worked! I healed myself with healthy food, herbs, exercise and got off all the medications. I truly learned first-hand that food can be our medicine.
And, there it began with a new found passion to help others...I went back to school to get an associate degree as a dietetic technician, then off to ODU for a master’s in health science-community health. I am still an avid reader on health and nutrition, experimenting with herbs, supplements, and detox cleanses. I LOVE talking and learning about nutrition! It is my passion, my love, my life. I know I am able to help others with many different health issues everyday as I meet clients every day. It was a gift to have those health challenges twenty years ago that at the time I labeled a personal nightmare, never knowing it would provide impetus to propel me into the career I so enjoy today. Favorite Fruitive Menu items: Oh, it’s hard to pick what menu item I like best at Fruitive. I do love the Fit smoothie, but I get it with almond butter instead of peanut butter. I also love the Hale to the Kale salad. I get those at least a few times a week.
Favorite fruit: Banana. That was one of my first foods being born in Hawaii.
Favorite vegetable: Sweet Potato.
What is a food you like to make at home: My favorite hot drink in the colder months would be organic coffee with the medicinal mushroom Chaga added. I also add coconut oil and cinnamon.. it’s delicious!
